Menthol

Menthol is a naturally occurring compound most commonly obtained from peppermint essential oil, although it can also be produced synthetically. It is responsible for the characteristic cooling and refreshing sensation experienced after applying certain cosmetic products.

Although menthol does not actually lower the skin's temperature, it activates the receptors responsible for sensing cold. When it comes into contact with the skin, these receptors send a signal to the brain similar to the one triggered when the body is exposed to lower temperatures. As a result, menthol creates a pleasant cooling and refreshing sensation without changing the skin's actual temperature. Because of this effect, menthol is widely used in products designed to refresh and soothe the skin after sun exposure, physical activity, or hair removal.

Menthol can be found in after-sun skincare products, foot creams, body lotions, scalp care products, lip balms, shaving products and many other cosmetic formulations. In addition to its cooling effect, it enhances the feeling of freshness and comfort during use.
