Brazilian Hair Straightening

Brazilian hair straightening is a type of keratin treatment. It smooths and straightens the hair, making it shiny, sleek, and less prone to frizz. The treatment got its name because it first gained popularity in Brazil, where women with naturally wavy and curly hair were seeking a long-lasting smoothing solution without harsh chemical processing.

What does the Brazilian hair straightening process involve?

  • First, the hair is washed with a deep-cleansing shampoo to remove any product buildup and allow better absorption of the treatment.
  • A keratin-based product, containing keratin (a protein that is a natural building block of hair), is then applied to clean, dry hair.
  • Next, the hair is blow-dried and flat-ironed. Heat activates the keratin and “locks” it into the hair shaft, resulting in smooth, straight, and shiny hair.
  • Finally, the hair may be rinsed and styled as needed.

This treatment significantly eases daily hair styling. It is important to note that the treatment does not always completely straighten the hair. The final result depends on the natural texture of the hair and the specific formula used.

The effects of Brazilian keratin hair straightening typically last from two to four months, with longevity largely depending on post-treatment care. It is recommended to use sulfate-free shampoos, as harsh ingredients can strip keratin from the hair more quickly and shorten the duration of the effect.
